About Flags

June 20th, 2008

Flags inspire.

They rally both the hopeless as well as the hopeful.

Flags are equalizers. Be we poets or politicians, when we stand before our flag, we stand as equal citizens.

To tell the story of any flag is to tell a story about what compels men and women to risk their lives for that most human and most ephemeral of things: An idea. A belief. A common cause.

The story of the flag of the United States is no exception, coming as it does through the foggy and acrid smoke of battle, evolving as it did from the flags of our past, and surviving still. During times of war, it has been pieced together, in secret, by candlelight, from scraps of petticoats as well as from the silk of parachutes. In times of war or peace, the flag flies.

This site is dedicated to the inspiration, the hope, the equality, the idea, the belief and the common cause.

  3. Thank you so much for your kind words. It was so nice to hear that you liked it. I wasn’t sure if I was writing to myself or not.
